How to Fix Bent Frames by Yourself

Bent glasses can be straightened, but it may take some time and patience. At Mojo, we regard glasses as an indispensable partner, and it is definitely worthwhile to spend some effort trying to repair them. The following ways are provided to guide you on how to straighten and repair bent glasses.

Most people may have experienced this nightmare. Your glasses have just been placed somewhere and then, unfortunately, crunched. The glasses may get damaged due to various reasons, whether being crushed or fallen from a height, and you may feel very sorry about it. If you still want to keep your frames, you can follow the steps below to fix them.

Recognize the Problem

First, you need to determine where the kink of the glasses is. Normally, you find that the frames are bent because they don't fit your face, but you are not sure where the problem is.

However, it is not difficult to determine. Place your glasses on a table or another flat surface, and pay attention to the warped side, because this is the side that needs to be repaired.

    Fix Bent Acetate Frames

Before repairing, you need to know which method is right for your frames. This actually depends on the material that your glasses are made of. With acetate frames, you only need to prepare warm water or steam. As the acetate is heated, it becomes flexible enough to allow you to gently straighten the frames back to their normal shape. Here are the exact steps to follow:

    • 1. First, fill a bowl with warm water at a not too hot temperature. If it is too hot for you to touch, it is too hot for your acetate glasses.
    • 2. Put your glasses in warm water, or pour them with it. A time between 30 seconds and one minute is needed so the bent frames can be exposed to the warmth.
    • 3. Remember that once heated enough, the glasses will be very fragile.
    • 4. Hold the glasses steady when making fine adjustments with your thumbs. Each fine-tuning needs to control the intensity and apply a little pressure slowly.
    • 5. Try them on or place them on a flat surface to assess the repair effect. If they are still bent, repeat the process again.

      Fix Bent Metal Frames

To repair bent metal frames, two things are necessary: soft plastic-tipped pliers and a thin cloth. Then, follow the steps below:

      • 1. Put a thin cloth on the glasses to prevent them from being damaged. A handkerchief or cloth napkin is acceptable.
      • 2. Make sure the cloth is not wrinkled so that you can see the bending of the glasses underneath it.
      • 3. Place the pliers on the bent part of the frames.
      • 4. When adjusting, please hold the glasses firmly, but try to control the intensity.
      • 5. Try them on to see if they are symmetrical and straight. If not, continue to straighten and align as needed.
